Flying with a pushchair and car seat: rules for flights to Crete
Most airlines that fly to Heraklion let you check in one or two child items free with an infant, usually a pushchair plus a car seat or travel cot. You can push the pushchair to the gate or the aircraft door, but in Heraklion it usually comes back on the baggage belt. A car seat can only be used on board if your child has their own seat.

Flying with a pushchair
- Your pushchair travels free as a child item. You can use it through the airport and leave it at the gate or the aircraft door.
- At security you take your baby out and fold the pushchair onto the belt.
- In Heraklion most pushchairs come back on the baggage belt, so you carry your baby through the terminal.
- Pushchairs can come back scratched or damaged from the hold. A padded travel bag helps.
Flying with a car seat
- A car seat can travel in the hold as a free child item on most airlines.
- To use it on board your child needs their own seat, and the car seat must be approved for aircraft use and narrow enough for the airline seat.
- Babies on a lap use a loop belt instead; some airlines do not allow car seats on board for infants at all.
- Your car seat from home may not fit your rental car in Crete, and taxis rarely have the right seat.
Travel cot and high chair
- A travel cot often counts as a child item, but then it replaces the car seat or another item.
- High chairs are not on the child item lists, so they travel as a normal hold bag.
