Best beaches near Heraklion for toddlers: sandy and shallow

The best beaches near Heraklion for toddlers are Stalis, Gouves, Kokkini Hani and Amoudara: long stretches of sand with water that stays shallow for many metres. When the summer meltemi blows, head for sheltered spots such as Sarantari cove in Hersonissos, the eastern cove of Potamos beach in Malia or the bay at Agia Pelagia.

How to choose a toddler beach on Crete's north coast

Almost every beach near Heraklion faces north, which means two things. First, the sand is often soft and the water shallow, which is exactly what small children need. Second, the beaches are open to the meltemi, the northerly wind that blows on many summer days, especially in July and August. It usually picks up in the afternoon, so a beach that is flat calm at 9:00 can have proper waves by 15:00.

When you compare beaches with a baby or toddler, check four things:

  • Sand or pebbles: sand is easier for crawling, digging and bare feet.
  • How shallow: look for a gentle slope where the water stays at knee height for a good distance.
  • Wind shelter: a headland, a bay or a small pier makes a big difference on windy days.
  • Facilities and shade: umbrellas, a taverna with toilets, showers and a lifeguard in season. Natural shade is rare on the north coast.

The best beaches near Heraklion for babies and toddlers

Amoudara: the long sandy beach next to the city

Amoudara runs for several kilometres west of Heraklion city. The sand is fine and the water stays shallow a long way out, which is why local families love it. The catch is wind: Amoudara is a known windsurfing spot, and waves build on breezy afternoons. Natural shade is scarce, but hotels and beach bars rent umbrellas along most of the strip. The western end is usually quieter.

Agia Pelagia: calm bay, but not a sand pit

Agia Pelagia, about 20 km west of Heraklion, sits in a bay protected from the north wind, so the water is often calm when the rest of the coast is choppy. The beach is coarse sand mixed with fine shingle and quite narrow in places, and the seabed drops off faster than at Stalis or Gouves. Bring water shoes and stay close to the shore with toddlers.

Fodele: a quieter option to the west

Fodele beach, around 25 km west of Heraklion, has sand mixed with pebbles and clear water. The western side is organised with sunbeds and showers and is partly protected by a pier near the hotel, while the eastern side is quieter and unorganised. It is exposed to the north wind, so treat it as a morning beach in high summer.

Kokkini Hani: closest to the airport

Kokkini Hani lies just east of Heraklion Airport. Its several small beaches have sand and shallow water, and some are protected by small artificial piers, which helps on windy days. Most are organised with sunbeds and umbrellas. Planes do pass overhead, which some toddlers find exciting rather than annoying.

Gouves: small sandy beaches with piers

Gouves is about 18 km east of Heraklion and one of the easiest bases for families. The beaches are sandy with shallow, warm water. They are open to the north wind, but several small piers and the little harbour create calmer pockets for paddling. Cretaquarium is a few minutes away for a non-beach morning.

Hersonissos: pick the coves

The main beach in Hersonissos is narrow and busy. For toddlers, the better choice is Sarantari, a small cove west of town sheltered by the Sarantaris headland with clear, shallow water. Star Beach, on the edge of town, has sandy coves, lots of facilities and a water park next door.

Stalis: shallow for a long way out

Stalis (Stalida) has a long sandy beach where the water stays at knee height for a good distance, ideal for toddlers who want to splash without you wading out. It is well organised, with sunbeds, umbrellas, showers and lifeguards in season. The seabed is mostly sand with some seagrass.

Malia: head to the east side

The central beach in Malia is lively. Families do better east of the port at Potamos, a long sandy beach that is usually less crowded. Its easternmost cove is curved and more sheltered, so it gets fewer waves than the long straight stretch next to it. The Minoan palace of Malia is nearby for a short, flat walk with a stroller.

Beach day tips with a baby or toddler

  • Timing: in summer, aim for the beach before 11:00 and after 16:30. The midday sun is strong from May to September.
  • Shade: rent an umbrella or bring a UV tent. Many north coast beaches have no trees.
  • Feet: sand gets very hot by late morning. Water shoes help on shingle and around rocks.
  • Flags and lifeguards: respect red flags. Waves can build quickly on exposed beaches.
  • Getting around: most of these beaches are easiest by car, so plan for a proper car seat. Our guide to car seats in Crete explains the options.

Frequently asked questions

Which beach near Heraklion is best for toddlers?

Stalis and Gouves are the easiest all-rounders: soft sand, very shallow water close to shore, lifeguards in season and plenty of sunbeds and tavernas. On windy days, Sarantari cove near Hersonissos and the bay at Agia Pelagia are more sheltered.

Are the beaches near Heraklion windy?

The north coast is exposed to the meltemi, a northerly summer wind that is strongest in July and August and usually builds in the afternoon. Go to the beach in the morning and choose a cove sheltered by a headland or a pier on windy days.

Is there a sandy beach close to Heraklion Airport?

Yes. Amoudara, west of Heraklion city, and Kokkini Hani, east of the airport, are both sandy and roughly 10 to 20 minutes by car from Heraklion Airport depending on traffic.

Is Agia Pelagia good for small children?

The bay is well sheltered from the north wind, so the water is usually calm, but the sand is coarse with fine shingle and the seabed drops off fairly quickly. It suits families who want calm water and stay close to the shore with their toddler.
