Crete water parks with toddlers: which one to choose

For toddlers and babies, the best water parks in Crete are Acqua Plus near Hersonissos and Watercity near Heraklion, as both have separate shallow children's pools and mini slides. Star Beach in Hersonissos is right on the sea and lively, and Limnoupolis near Chania is the choice if you are staying in the west. Go early, claim a shaded spot and pack swim nappies.

The water parks in Crete at a glance

Crete has three water parks along the north coast east of Heraklion and one near Chania. All of them are seasonal, all have something for small children, and all get busy in July and August. The big difference for parents is how much space and shade there is around the children's pools, and how far you have to drive with a tired toddler at the end of the day.

Acqua Plus water park, Hersonissos

Acqua Plus sits on a hillside a few kilometres inland from Hersonissos, near the Crete Golf Club. The park is split into two zones: one for younger children and one for older kids and adults, and you can move freely between them. The kids' side has shallow play pools, small slides and a water playground, and the lazy river is gentle enough for a toddler on your lap with a float.

What parents like about Acqua Plus is the planting: lawns, trees and gardens break up the concrete, so it feels less frantic than a classic slide park. Sunbeds and parasols are available, and the paths are paved, so a stroller is handy for nap time. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

Watercity, near Heraklion

Watercity is in Anopolis, roughly halfway between Heraklion and Gouves, and is the closest water park to Heraklion Airport. It is the biggest of the Crete water parks, with a wave pool, lazy river, two children's pools and a long list of slides. Slides are graded by height, so children under about 90 cm will mostly stay in the children's pools and on the gentlest slides, which is plenty at that age.

Because it is so large, Watercity can feel overwhelming with a baby in peak season. Choose a base near the children's pools, use the stroller for moving around and for a shaded nap, and leave the bigger rides to one parent at a time. The park uses wristbands for payments inside, so keep the band on your wrist rather than in a bag.

Star Beach water park, Hersonissos

Star Beach is on the seafront in Hersonissos, part of the Star Beach resort complex. It mixes pools, slides and a lazy river with direct access to the beach, plus a children's pool and splash area. Hotel guests get free access, and day visitors should check the current entry rules and prices on the official website before going.

Be aware that Star Beach has a party side, with DJs and an afternoon foam party in summer. It is fun with older children, but for a baby or a young toddler, morning visits are calmer. If you are staying in Hersonissos or Stalis it is an easy half day without a car.

Limnoupolis, near Chania

If you are staying in the west, Limnoupolis in Varypetro is about 7 km from Chania town and the only water park in that part of the island. It has a big central pool, slides for all levels and a separate kids' pool with play areas. It is compact, so the walk from your sunbed to the kids' pool is short, which makes a real difference with toddlers. From Heraklion it is a long day trip of around two hours each way, so it only makes sense if you are based around Chania.

Tips for a water park day with a baby or toddler

  • Swim nappies: Pools require them for babies and toddlers. Bring more than you think, plus a wet bag. You can buy them in Crete supermarkets too.
  • Sun protection: UV suit, hat and high factor sun cream. Reapply after every swim.
  • Shade: Parasols go fast. Arrive at opening time, or bring a pop-up sunshade if the park allows it.
  • Hot surfaces: Paving gets very hot by midday. Water shoes protect small feet.
  • Timing: Plan two or three hours in the morning, a shaded lunch and nap, then leave before the late afternoon rush on the roads.
  • Height limits: Every park measures children for the slides. Check the rules at the entrance so there are no tears at the top of the stairs.
  • Tickets: Under-3s usually go free and children pay a reduced price. Check current opening times and prices on the official website, and look for online deals.
  • Transfers: Tour companies sell water park tickets with bus transfers, but buses rarely have car seats. With a baby, driving yourself is usually easier.

Which water park should you choose?

  1. Toddler under 3, wants calm: Acqua Plus.
  2. Mixed ages, older siblings who want big slides: Watercity.
  3. Staying in Hersonissos, no car: Star Beach, ideally in the morning.
  4. Staying in Chania, Platanias or Agia Marina: Limnoupolis.

Stroller and car seat for your water park day

A water park day means a drive, a long walk from the car park and a nap somewhere in between. A light, reclining stroller does both jobs, and an i-Size car seat that fits your child properly makes the drive easy. Rather than flying with bulky gear, rent it in Crete: Holiday Stork strollers and car seats start from €7.80 per day, VAT included, with a minimum rental of 4 days. Car seats are fitted in your rental car at hand-over, and all gear is steam-cleaned after every rental.

Delivery is €13 per booking to Heraklion Airport, Heraklion city and the north coast resorts from Agia Pelagia to Malia, which covers Gouves and Hersonissos, and €26 elsewhere in Crete (€32 in the Chania region).
