Best time to visit Crete with a baby: month by month
The best time to visit Crete with a baby is late May to June or September to early October. Days are warm rather than hot, the sea is pleasant for paddling and the resorts are calmer than in July and August. Peak summer works too, but you will plan your days around the midday heat and the afternoon wind.
| Best months with a baby | Late May, June, September, early October |
|---|---|
| Warmest sea | August and September, about 24-26°C |
| Hottest months | July and August, coastal highs around 29-32°C |
| Windiest months (north coast) | July and August (meltemi) |
| Busiest months | July and August |
| Quietest warm months | May and October |
Temperatures in this guide are typical long-term averages for the Heraklion area. Real days can be hotter or cooler, and the south coast is usually a little warmer than the north.
Crete weather with a baby, month by month
April: green, quiet, cool sea
Daytime highs are typically around 20°C, with cool evenings. The island is green and full of flowers, and it is a great month for sightseeing at Knossos or walking in Chania old town with a stroller. The sea is about 16-17°C, too cold for most babies. Easter can be busy with local visitors, and some resort hotels are only just opening.
May: comfortable and calm
Crete in May with a baby is very pleasant. Highs are typically around 23-25°C, the sun is strong but not punishing, and most hotels and tavernas are open. The sea warms from about 19°C to 20°C through the month, which is fresh for little ones, so short paddles and a warm pool are the best mix. Wind is usually lighter than in summer.
June: our favourite month for toddlers
Highs are typically around 27-28°C, the sea reaches about 22-23°C and the long days make it easy to fit in beach time around naps. School holidays in most of Europe have not started yet, so beaches are calmer than in July. The meltemi starts to appear later in the month.
July and August: hot, busy and windy
These are the hottest and busiest months. Coastal highs are typically around 29-32°C, heatwaves can go higher, and inland areas get much hotter. The sea is warm at about 25-26°C. On the north coast the meltemi, a dry northerly wind, often blows, usually building in the afternoon. It cools the air but brings waves to exposed beaches and makes sand blow. With a baby:
- Go to the beach early and again after about 16:30.
- Spend the middle of the day indoors, in shade or in a shaded pool.
- Choose sheltered beaches on windy days. See our guide to the best beaches near Heraklion for toddlers.
- Book accommodation and gear early, as everything is busier.
September: warm sea, softer sun
For many parents September is the sweet spot. Highs are typically around 27-28°C, the sea is at its warmest of the comfortable months at about 24-26°C, and the crowds thin out after the first week or two. The wind is usually calmer than in August.
October: quiet and still swimmable
Early October often feels like early summer, with highs typically around 24°C and a sea of about 22-23°C. It is a lovely month for a toddler holiday. As the month goes on, rain becomes more likely, evenings cool down and some resort hotels and beach bars close for the winter.
November: mild, but off season
Highs are typically around 20°C and the sea is still about 20-21°C, but rainy days are more common and many resort areas wind down. It works for a relaxed, city-based stay in Heraklion or Chania rather than a beach holiday.
Winter: December to March
Winter in Crete is mild compared with northern Europe, but it is the rainy season, the sea is cold and most coastal resorts are closed. The cities stay lively and it can be a good time to visit family or see the island without crowds, with layers and a rain cover for the stroller.

Sun safety for babies and toddlers in Crete
- Shade first: keep babies under 6 months out of direct sun. Use a UV tent or umbrella on the beach and a stroller sunshade that does not block airflow.
- Cover up: a wide-brimmed hat and a UV swimsuit do more than sunscreen alone.
- Sunscreen: for older babies and toddlers, use a high-factor sunscreen made for children and reapply after swimming. Pharmacies across Crete stock them.
- Hydration: offer extra milk feeds or water often, especially in July and August.
- Hot surfaces: sand, car seats and stroller frames heat up fast. Park in shade and check buckles before strapping in.
